Operations Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 2

Operations Management - Essay Example The essence of Operations Management is the need to make rational decisions in difficult circumstances with limited, imperfect information Operations management deals with decision making related to production processes to ensure that the results are produced according to specifications. Information about materials, labor and resources are used to obtain goods or services using one or more conversion and transformation processes. This adds value to the product. (Shim and Siegel, 1999, p. 2) Operations management begins with a step-by-step process and plans which are based on careful analysis and decisions of a product or service. Operating plans are made according to long-term and short-term strategy and are translated into schedules to be followed by production processes. Production planning and material control have to be coordinated with manufacturing in the execution of the plan. Main Points Operations management is basically concerned with the production of goods. But it is now linked to almost all areas of business activity. Operations management is concerned with the ‘design, operation and improvement of the systems’ that focuses on the creation and delivery of the company’s product or service (Lowson, 2002, p. 4). Since this definition emphasizes on the systems of the organization, it also emphasizes the internal and external systems that include resources and technologies for the creation and development of the company’s product or service. ... Operations management started as a concept and planning method during the early 1900s of rapid industrialization and the demands of munitions production in World War I. Management scientists Elton Mayo and Frederic Taylor studied people and productivity in factory. There were many firsts during this time as these social scientists provided theories and applications in their studies. Henry Gantt developed his now-famous Gantt chart which is used in project management. Operations management needs vast amount of information in order to be successful. Computers were then non-existent and with the emergence of mainframe digital computers in the 1950s and 1960s, processing and updating of critical path networks became faster and easier. Du Pont, an old-time defence industry organisation exploited this to produce powerful planning and scheduling tool. Globalisation and information revolution influenced the way operations are run in organisations. The Internet and Information Technology have made the life of the operations manager quite easier. This began in the 1970s when the rapid growth of information technology saw the emergence of automation in industries and manufacturing. Vast amounts of information from databases are now available to planners and operations managers. The emergence of IT brought another different kind of project manager on the scene; they are the IT project managers who possessed technical and mental skills needed to lead teams developing IT projects. (Lock, 2007, p. 3) Operations management can be subdivided into sections to make planning and operations easier: 1. Decision making tools and methods 2. Demand

History II Take Home Exam - Assignment Example s benefited immensely from the Revolution as Lenin’s socialist government took over all but the nominal businesses and redistributed land amongst peasant farmers. The Lenin-led government also significantly improved food distribution patterns, allowing the proletariat to gain access to sufficient food quantities. In the 1910s, prior to the Russian Revolution, Russians resented Nicholas II’s corrupt, autocratic government that did not appreciate the needs of ordinary Russians. Ordinary Russians faced issues such as overcrowding in urban areas since they did not own land, food insufficiency, long and deplorable working hours and poor economic situations because of inadequate wages. No group was significantly better than others since even the nobles had to seek new ways to subsist within the changing economic and political environment (McNeill 220). It became difficult to define boundaries between social groups because of the increased migration of peasants, gentry professionals and worker intellectuals to urban centers. Security is more valuable than freedom because without security, freedom cannot exist. Security provides a favorable en vironment in which people’s wellbeing is safeguarded. To the Russians, personal freedom was critical, especially with regard to freedom to own land, freedom from oppressive governance and freedom to humane living conditions. Years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the argument still rages on whether or not the US had sufficient reasons to bomb Japan. In the raging debate, I would vote that the US had no justification to bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is because Japan was ready to quit the war, especially since conventional bombings had destroyed in excess of 60 of its cities. Japan was losing on both sides of the war since the Soviets attacked Japanese troops in Manchuria (McNeill 307). Secondly, America’s refusal to alter its unconditional surrender ultimatum to allow Japan to maintain its emperor

Being aware of the factors that contribute to their disease is as important as knowing their cultural background. The Core Competency of the Company Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

The Core Competency of the Company - Case Study Example Brand strategies define buyer experience-through the products offered, the advertising messages conveyed, indeed through every interaction between an organization and a buyer-and through that experience buyers develop an understanding of brand differences (perceptions), form judgments about the value of brand differences (preferences), and create a logic for choosing among brands (brand choice strategies). We refer to strategies that teach buyers as market-driving strategies (Bearden et al 77). Because of the Japanese consumer's traditional focus on corporate reputations, Japan has been considered a tough market for individual brands. This rising importance of branding, segmentation, and positioning has created new opportunities. In addition to Asahi and Honda, other nimble companies are taking advantage of the changes in the market to identify and capture specific segments of the market. Given the need to balance corporate and product-level branding, Sharp is applying a variety of approaches. These range from the more traditional corporate branding to two-story branding to narrow individual brand positioning. Companies are also using more Sharp -style branding (Boone and Kurtz 72). High technology continues to have an intense attraction for consumers, who recently favored such products as wristwatch PCs flat-screen TVs, and satellite cellular phones. New product development in Japan used to be technology and shelf-driven. In this environment, Japanese firms developed an unparalleled capacity for rapid product innovations, churning out new products and variations at a breathtaking rate (Collis and Noda 5). Japanese companies continue to have tremendous capabilities in rapid product innovation. of new product launches is greater in Japan than in the United States. In other categories, such as household products, the number of new product launches relative to the size of the market is larger in Japan than in the United States. In a few categories, such as foods, Japan lags behind the United States in producing new products (Kotler and Armstrong 92). Core competencies of Sharp are unique approach to products and entrepreneur spirit, innovative and state-of-the-art solution. The choice criteria of Japanese consumers is complex and changing rapidly. The approach to such cross-sectional variability would be niche marketing. United States marketers would find segments of the market in which the company has advantages over rivals and concentrate on those markets. But because Japanese consumers have traditionally been hard to segment and consumer choices have changed quickly-and, in many cases, randomly- Japanese firms instead developed a "rapid fire" approach to marketing to deal with the tremendous variability of their markets (Kotler and Keller 62). 2.In what ways does being a Japanese company contribute to Sharp's success Traditionally, Japanese companies have focused on building large, ambiguous corporate brands, so the "what" of brand positioning has been very difficult to pin down. In a market perceived to be homogeneous, the "whom" of brand positioning has also been very difficult to determine. In effect, the "what" and "whom" of Japanese
